His grandfather Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a poet of the Nayi Kavita Literary Movement of Hindi literature and professor at the Allahabad University, Uttar Pradesh.  Abhishek’s grandmother Teji Bachchan, was a social activist.  His maternal grandfather was Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, a famous author, poet and wrote the famous book Obhishopto Chambol (Cursed Chambal). Bachchan belongs to Kayastha Hindu Family.

On 11 October 2002, at Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday celebration, Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor announced their engagement. But, The engagement was called off in January 2003 due to some family issues. He dated Karisma Kapoor for 5 years.

On 14 January 2007, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai announced their engagement and later confirmed by his father, Amitabh Bachchan. While filming for Dhoom 2, Abhishek Bachchan fell in love with Aishwarya Rai.
