7 Challenges Most College Students Face During Their Freshman Year

Lots of college students start off eager to get their degree and make things better for themselves at home and work. But once they dive into college, they hit some tough hurdles.  

And, honestly speaking, some of these obstacles can feel like mountains standing in the way of your dreams. That’s why it’s important for colleges to figure out what’s bugging their students. 

But, as most of them won’t do as such, the responsibility falls upon you to take care of yourself. I have offered a little bit of assistance in this regard here.

1: The Uncertainty of Your Finances 

As a student, you probably won’t have too much money on your hands even if you’re involved in a job. So, having the financial burden on your shoulders can really weigh you down and make it difficult for you to enjoy your college life. I mean, imagine a situation where you can’t even pay for your tuition, books, or food. The pressure can be really excruciating. 

Unfortunately, college costs a lot, and not knowing if you’ll have enough money can make things even harder. And for students who have to help their families while going to college, the pressure can be even more intense. Luckily though, there’s a solution to it.  

The Solution: Student loans, in essence, are quite easy to get. And, if you know a way or two to handle them, I’m sure you can pay them back pretty easily as well. However, if you’ve found the experience to be too overwhelming, it might be better to talk to a financial advisor.  

2: Managing Your Commitments 

College life is like trying to solve a big puzzle, you know? You’ve got classes, work, family stuff – it’s a lot to handle! And it’s not just older students feeling the pressure.  

Even if you’re more of a typical college student, juggling part-time jobs, internships, and maybe some extracurriculars can leave you feeling like you’re running in circles.  

No wonder so many people end up feeling totally swamped! 

The Solution: Work management is a skill you will require throughout your life. I’d personally ask you to upskill yourself in this aspect by using a calendar.  

Keep a detailed schedule of what you need to do daily. This way, even if you forget something, it will help you get through it by the end of the day. If you’re still having trouble, I’d ask you to set an alarm for each of the tasks you have for that specific day or week. 

3: Feeling Homesick 

Feeling homesick when you start college is super common. Being away from your fam and pals, trying to figure out a new routine, and being in a totally new place can really hit you in the feels. 

It’s important to stay in touch with your loved ones back home, but also don’t forget to enjoy the freedom and cool stuff that comes with being on your own.  

The Solution: If you really miss your family, it might be better to call them every day. If you are living near your house, be sure to visit them at the weekends when you have time.  

4: Challenges Related to Accessibility 

Lots of students in college might have trouble handling their projects and assignments, especially if they have disabilities or special learning needs.  

Getting around campus can be tough for some, too.  

Everyone has their own needs, you know? So, ensuring everyone can finish their coursework and graduate might mean giving them some extra help or accommodation. 

Imagine this: some students might need some extra help with learning, like using special tech or software, having someone take notes for them, or getting extra tutoring.  

Then there are those with physical disabilities who just need things like ramps or elevators to get around campus easily, or maybe closer housing or classrooms. 

5: Managing Your Time 

You know, handling your time well is like being the captain of your own ship.
