Wendell Edward Pierce was born on December 8, 1962, in New Orleans, Louisiana, US. He belongs to a black middle-class family where his mother, Althea, worked as a teacher and his father, Amos, was a maintenance engineer. He has two brothers.
Wendell was raised with his brothers in the family. They lived in the community of Pontchartrain Park, the first post-war African-American suburb. His father had helped the Marines branch of US Armed Forces to fight in the Battle of Saipan in 1944. After he returned, they moved to this place in their neighborhood.

Pierce graduated in 1981 from both Benjamin Franklin High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, where he was named a Presidential Scholar of the Arts.
